When I asked a friend do you ever pretend to be someone your not?
They replied :I don't care about being cool. Don't feel pressure by people to act to different. I choose what I want to follow and what click to be in. Everything that i am is just natural to me. I am me and that's it. I do things not because I'm striving to to be different it's because I like it. I set my own standards.

You have a tattoo, isn't that costuming/ adorning the self?
I guess I do adorn... but my tattoo explains apart of my upbringing and culture. It has personal significance to me. It's very personal not in a place that it is shown off. It's not in any "sexy" place. It's on my back and if I want someone to see it then that's sharing a part of me to that someone.

I think we are all guilty of trying to aggrandize and costume/mask ourselves because we want to feel like we matter even though some claim not to. We are guilty in some way or another. I sometimes feel like I need too dress to impress to get the approval of others or change my personality up a bit in order to fit in with a certain group.

HW 30

Where does the emptiness that so many people feel inside come from? This emptiness inside of people that makes us feel incomplete or insignificant. We all have the desire to fill or cover up our hole of emptiness but why?

Maybe this sense of meaninglessness and emptiness comes from knowing that we are all inevitably going to DIE. "There is no remembrance of men of old, and even those who are yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow." Ecclesiastes 1:11 . Knowing that you are going to die in my opinion is very strong motivation to want to make one’s life meaningful. Knowing that we are “temporary” beings pushes us to want to make something out of our lives. We then turn to playing certain main character roles in our lives/stories to substitute for the emptiness and the fact that we are going to die. William Shakespeare said “Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more; it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” Meaning that we go through life playing a character that either pretends to be cool to fill the hole of emptiness inside of us or worries about how to live life but in none of that will matter because we’ll just end up dying. It will all be over but for the time being we are focused on satisfying the emptiness and meaninglessness by creating self importance and getting others to make and think that we are important so that we feel significant.

Some philosophers believe that the stem of our loneliness comes from God. Religion adds meaning to some people's lives and they believe that having a relationship with God can and will cure the loneliness and emptiness they feel inside. German philosopher and theologian Paul Tillich argues that "Religion is the state of being grasped by an ultimate concern, a concern which qualifies all other concerns as preliminary and which itself contains the answer to the question of a meaning of our life." To have meaning and a purpose in life is about being connected to God. Without this connection some feel like they are meaningless and don't have a purpose in life. I think that people just want to feel like their living for a reason and feel significant in any way possible.

Philosopher Fraud believed that our emptiness comes from "the separation from the mother" . The separation we as children experience from our mothers when we realize that we have to compete for her love and attention when all of it is directed onto the father. We then begin to feel a disconnection from our mother. Which in return makes us feel all alone and like we don't matter to her. The mother is separate from us whose attention is not only fixed on us. I think that we long to be nurtured, we want to be loved , cared for and taken care of. When we feel like were missing those things in our lives we feel incomplete. Then we start looking for methods to cover up / hide it from ourselves and the world.

Making young people feel like they are being understood is one of the techniques that marketers use to sell their products. Young people want to feel understood and special and if marketers are able to do so then teens will be more receptive and more willing to buy their products. Making it easier to sell to them. These corporations are selling an identity to young people. Thinking how young people think today is a way for these companies to reach them and therefore have their products reach them as well.

Young people are marketed what is cool or hot through the things they watch, read and listen to. Young people are being sold "youth culture" any way the corporate companies can reach them. Having a famous person wear their products or endorse it, speaks to teens. " A marketing ploy that puts specific products into the hands of actors that will be shown using them in movies and TV shows". Young people want to be cool and if their favorite artist or actor has it then that will sell the product.

Companies are becoming "cool" to better relate their merchandise to young people. By knowing what they want and giving it to them. Understanding the youth culture allows them to figure out what to sell to them but making the youth think they are trying to understand them and what they want. But it's just a ploy to sell the youth what they want to sell to them.

C., Krystle. "How to Be Cool at School." WikiHow 1. Web. 7 Dec 2009. .

This article was a list of tips on how to be cool at school. How you can achieve coolness in school if you follow the list of 13 tips which suggest you "have your own sense of style" and "be fit, clean, and smell good" because this is what people in school will be looking for in order to define you as cool or not.

I thought that the list of tips was funny like " if you're a girl, always wear a bit of jewelry" because wearing jewelry will be the key factor in determining if I'm cool or not. I also liked that the list included "respecting others" and "keeping an open mind" because it reminded me of what some of the people I interviewed said made a person cool. I thought it was interesting that this article mentioned nothing about being yourself but rather it was a list of how to fit in and put a mask on when your at school.

Rice, Jeff. "What is Cool? Notes on Intellectualism, Popular Culture, and Writing ." CTheory 1. Web. 7 Dec 2009. .

This article was about what is cool? and marketing coolness to people. As stated in a wired magazine article titled "The Phenomenon of Cool" , there definition of cool is the advertisement's audience, purpose, and product for sale. How everyone is so occupied with becoming cool or having the coolest latest stuff.

This article made me realize that advertisers try to market products as cool or as the hottest new trend in order to get us to buy, buy ,buy , which we end up doing. But the coolest item or the latest trend is not long lasting since there are constantly new "cool" products coming out and the coolest trends end up becoming last season's trends. What's cool today might not be cool tomorrow.

Fenichel,Michael. "What is "Cool"? (What's Hot? What's Not?)." Michael Fenichel Teaching Tools 1. (Copyright ©1997-2008): n. pag. Web. 7 Dec 2009. .

This article was about the obstacles that adolescence face, one being achieving ultimate coolness. It talked about teens using other teens to define themselves.

I thought that it was interesting that all teens at some point want to be cool or liked by the group of people they are trying to fit in with and they do so by changing their appearance or altering themselves in order to be accepted by their peers. A lot of this fitting in and being accepted has to do with self esteem. Instead one should start accepting themselves instead of pleasing others which they might find is better than being cool.

Interviews with strangers, family and friends....

Who do you think is cooler Beyonce or Rihanna?

Katy: "Beyonce, because she grew up with all these influences around her music wise but still does her own thing. I don't know about Rihanna..."

Missy: "Rihanna, because Beyonce seems more superficial. All that Rihanna's been through makes her stronger and adds to her personality."

Where you cool in high school?

Katy: "I wasn't cool because I didn't care about anyone but sports but if you needed me to do your math homework then I was cool."

Missy: "I don't think I was cool in high school... I mean I wasn't cool or uncool I kind of just stood in the middle."

India: "I was kinda cool because I hung out with the cool kids."

What is cool ?

Katy: "Someone who is down to earth, doesn't care what anyone thinks. Someone who is honest. If you ain't honest then you ain't cool."

Missy: "It sounds cliche but originality. If you can be original and pull it off then cool."

Audrey: "Being yourself and not what others want you to be."

Who is the coolest person you know?

Katy: "My mom because who can raise children and still be calm and have it all together."

Missy: " All of my friends, they are each cool in their own way."

Do you have any tips on how to be cool?

Katy: " Be open minded to anything. Anything your open to and not what other people are."

Any last thoughts on Cool?

Missy: " I think that people are trying to redefine cool based on what the media is putting out there."

Are you cool?

Bro: "My friends seem to think so and the ladies."

Why?

Bro: " What do you mean why? Isn't it obvious ? (laughs). People tell me they like my style, they find me attractive and think I'm hilarious. They call it the "whole package"."

Brandon,

I liked how your story demonstrated how Eric's perception of what "cool" was changed and it showed in his actions . In the end he realized that being "cool" maybe wasn't what he wanted.

Michelle.

I enjoyed reading your story. It sounds like the "cool" kid didn't even know he was cool. It was more of how the others around him viewed him. He was more about doing his own thing than paying attention to others or what they thought.

Sam,

I liked your story, I agree the name of your character is funny. Your story was very straightforward about how this kid wanted to be accepted by his social group but that meant that he had to alter a little bit of himself in order to fit in with them.

Amber,

I like how in the end everyone wanted to be like Harmony because in their minds she was seen as "cool". Her rebellion made her seem like she was cool because no one else had the guts to do what she did. She was seen as different.

Matt,

I thought your story was great! and really well written. The characters in the book clearly have different views of what it means to be cool. It showed that being cool might not mean anything. That all that being cool gets you is lost and confused when it comes to knowing who you and what you want out of life .

After reading the five stories above I noticed that most of the characters wanted to be socially accepted by others. They all wanted to fit in. In Sam's story the main character switched up his style. In Amber and Michelle's story the characters were kind of seen as rebellious and all about doing their own thing.I also noticed in Brandon and Matt's stories their characters views on what is cool or being cool changed in the end because they realized that maybe that's not what they wanted anymore or it wasn't going to benefit them in a good way. In each story the definition of "cool" was different.

I liked how some of the stories expressed how maybe being "cool" isn't so cool after all. How having the hottest clothes, lots of friends, or having and doing other things that would qualify you as being cool isn't so cool after all. Because being cool isn't everything it comes down to the person's character (Brandon's story)and finding out who you really are (Matt's story).

Walking down the halls on another typical boring day of school. She was stopped by her assistant principle to help out a new student who just arrived that morning. She was pretty bummed that she had to be a tour guide but when this student stepped out of the office her eyes widened. She was like no other student who went to the school. This new girl was so different and seemed so intriguing. She looked like she just stepped out of a magazine with her appealing looks.

As she walked down the halls to show the "new" girl around, whispers were all they could hear and eyes were all they could see. Everyone stopped what they were doing to get a good look at the "new" girl. The look on the new girls face was as if she were used to this type of reaction from people. She had on the trendiest clothes. Girls began to take mental notes of what she was wearing. The guys were going gaga over her. From head to toe she stunned everyone. As she made her way down the halls, she listened to the whispers- " Look at what she's wearing, it's crazy but I like it!,"Wow,sunglasses and purple hair " "Usually no one would wear something like that but she pulls it off so well!",

As she looked around the classroom the next day she realized that everyone was wearing a replica of the sunglasses she had on the day before. She smiled to her self because that's exactly what she wanted. Until the door of the classroom swung open. In walked a kid named Sebastian, the loud class suddenly became quite as multiple hands reached toward there faces pulling the sunglasses off their faces. The "new" girl didn't seem so new anymore. Mouths widened including hers. As she realized that the attention would no longer be on her.

Sebastian was now the "new" kid. There goes those whispers again but they weren't about her anymore. She was so shocked, it was so unexpected. She was used to having all the attention on her that she forgot how it felt not to have any at all.

Cool?......

I think that cool is an image that people want to project. Everyone wants to be/ appear cool to the outside world. "Cool" is an expression that people use to describe something that they like, think is unique, is popular. To consider something cool means it's a good thing.Being "cool" matters to people because people fear what others think about them. The movies we watch, music we listen to, magazines we read, fashion, people we hangout with, etc. all have an effect on our perspective of "cool". But who's to say what is cool and what isn't?

Cool makes me think of conformity because everyone is so stuck on trying to fit in and being socially accepted by others. We care about our image. People follow what is cool or a person that is cool. It's almost like everyone puts on a mask to appear like something they are not. People want to be popular and well liked by the people around them. Even if that means we conform ourselves into becoming someone we might not truly be, just so that we can have the title of "cool".

Is being cool really a good thing ? It doesn't seem that way, it's almost like your selling apart of yourself so that you can be "cool" in the eye's of others and you can be high up on the social hierarchy. But after a while I think people's level of coolness starts to fade because then people have found someone new who's cooler . It might be fun and all good while it lasts but once it's gone people might realize that being cool might not have been that great of a thing after all.

Cool comes and goes just like the latest trends. So should it matter?

I think that my piece of art would be considered a mirror because it will allow one to reflect on how digital technology is affecting them. I titled the piece "Milk Our Brains" because I believe that we allow ourselves to become addicted to digital technology which in return is making us less intelligent individuals. We spend so much time watching TV, listening to our ipods or web browsing when we could be doing other things. Like playing a sport, reading or actually having a face-to-face conversation with someone. But instead we let it take over our lives. We let it milk our minds a bit every day. I drew a robot like figure because it seems like every time we use these digital devices like an ipod , the TV or the computer we become disembodied and so engrossed in what we are doing. These devices can be used as escape from reality. Every time we use digital technology our brains get milked. Which some believe is making us more stupid compared to other generations.

I think that my art inspires me to think about how much time I spend using digital technology and how it benefits or doesn't benefit me? " Milk Our Brains" makes me feel like I should seriously think about cutting down on the time I spend each day in front of my computer screen. We all should. Before are brains become completely empty.

I wasn't too excited about doing an art project because I'm not a very great artist... but the process of creating the piece was interesting.Developing my idea for the piece was a bit challenging because I didn't know what I was going to do. But once I got the idea it was just a matter of getting the idea to reflect the message through the piece.

Final Draft

DIGITAL CORPORATE MEDIA & CONSUMERISM

INTRODUCTION: Think about all the time you spend either watching TV, surfing the web, listening to the radio, reading magazines/newspapers …etc. Now think about how many advertisements you brain is bombarded with every time. The goal of digital corporate media is to get you (the consumer) to buy what they want you to buy. This is all the advertisements they throw at you. One of the fastest ways that will allow them to do so is in digital form. Since our society has become so digitally obsessed it seems like the perfect way for corporate companies to get you to buy their products. By doing so our society is not only becoming “corporate puppets” but we are all turning into what the media tells us to become. We are becoming so fixated and focused on all the materialistic things they tell us we need and should buy. Digital corporate media is brainwashing people while turning them into conformist consumers.

ARGUMENT#1: Advertising is a way for retailers to get all those who use various forms of digital media to buy and make aware of their goods. They place their ads in various styles on the web pages and media screens we watch and visit in banner, pop-ups, commercials, etc. “Media had an impact on 80% of the awareness phase of the funnel (a continuum that tracks a consumer from when he first becomes aware of a product through his actual purchase) and declined to 53% at the transaction phase. Two consistently strong contributors in most categories and purchase funnel phases are television and the Internet”(http://www.tvweek.com/news/2009/04/study_shows_tvs_impact_on_cons.php) Ad’s that appear on the television screen every time you watch TV about the movies you should go see to the home and kitchen appliances you need to make lives easier to the ad links that appear on the sides the websites you visit everyday influences the purchases as a consumer you make every day. Whether we choose to acknowledge it or not technology is powerful. If it can have the ability to influence consumer purchasing then imagine what else it can do.

We as people all have wants and needs. Digital corporate media just tells us what those wants and needs should be through their multiple advertisements. “Advertisers are insisting that not only is their ad served, but the user is engaged on that page and are going to see their ad. This is moving the business from buying space to actually buying time.”(http://www.digitalmediabuzz.com/2009/07/online-advertising-tv-model/) Part of the plan to reach out to consumers in order to sell their products is through multiple forms of digital media. Since we are surrounded by digital media on a daily basis, promoting their products this way will keep us surrounded by them as well. Advertising affects how and what we as consumers choose to buy. The more ads we see, the more money corporate companies make because eventually we will want to buy whatever it is they are trying to sell us.

One way for companies to attract buyers is getting them to purchase items online, thanks to their ads. Also know as online shopping. By getting consumers (us) to visit their store virtually, whether that is through the pop-up ads or the ones that show up on the
websites to visit their online store to start purchasing. “The current technology also allows sellers to track customers€™ product preferences, with their permission, and alert these customers of new products they may be waiting for or could be interested in.”(http://wiki.mediaculture.org.au/index.php/Online_Shopping_-_Benefits_for_Sellers) By placing their Ads online allow retailers to get a better picture of their consumers so that they know what to sell to them in order for them to buy their goods based on the consumer’s preferences for when you are actually ready to make a purchase. Using the internet as a tool allows companies to target consumers to get them to buy their products. Having consumers shop online benefit the companies because it allows their customers to shop online 24/7, no matter where they are.

ARGUMENT # 2: The more time we spend using digital technology the more we are told what to buy, what to look like, what music to listen to and so much more. The movie Josie and the Pussycats is just about that. The movie is set in a time where the record industries and the US government have been working together to drive the national economy by deciding to insert subliminal messages into music so that they can brainwash the people who listen to it, so that they do nothing but buy whatever they want them to. One of the hidden subliminal messages in a song is “Conform! Free thinking is overrated! There is no Area 51!”. By planting these messages in the songs they are selling and getting the teenagers around the country to listen to, opens the door for the government and the record labels to entice them to purchase and believe whatever the song is telling them to. With everyone listening to the same music makes the people conform because everyone is losing their ability to think for themselves since they are becoming brainwashed. They are losing their individuality due to the corporate media making them into their little puppets. Soon everyone starts to look like each other and everyone begins to chase a new trend every week as directed by the messages in the songs. Therefore the nation’s purchasing habits will be controlled by the government which as a result will make them a lot of money.

In the book Feed even though is set in the future is an allegory about today’s society. All the characters have feeds (digital technology) implanted in their brains and have companies bombarding their heads with the latest in everything on the market. They have absolutely no control over the contents of the feed. Making it easier for the corporate companies to advertise stuff to them and “feed off” them which forces them to buy, buy, buy. “According to the feed, they were on sale for like $699 at the Zone, and could be shipped to the hotel for an additional $78.95, and that was just one great thing that people were wearing.” The teens in the book buy things according to what their feeds tell them is the latest trend. What everyone else is wearing is what everyone buys. The latest trends matter to them because it’s important to them to be cool. The companies advertise things on their feeds for that exact reason. They know that the teens will want to buy whatever they are trying to sell if everyone wants it and buys it. Their wants are a result of all the advertisements the feed is throwing at them.

OPV: Some might argue that media advertising is good for the economy because ads influence consumer purchase decisions. “Advertising in a down economy is even more important than advertising during the good times,”.(http://www.signindustry.com/management/articles/2002-10-31-JL-AdvertInDownEconomy.php3) that advertising is important for the success of the company and the economy because ads generate interest and then lead consumers to purchase the goods which betters the economy. The economy feeds off of consumers. This can be bad because advertising raises a products cost. Corporations just want to increase their profits which make products in return more expensive.

OPV: Others also would argue that advertising is good because it brings attention to products that could potentially better a consumer's life by satisfying a need. It has become easier for consumers to buy things because of all the ads out there. Leading advertising to promote materialism, advertising cause’s excessive consumerism because consumers unnecessarily spend money on products they might not need. But because of the ads they are brainwashed with it becomes hard for them to decide what to buy and what not to buy.

CONNECTIONS: This connects to the boom of technology and its constant development .Making it easier for corporate companies to market their stuff. This way they will be able to advertise their goods and services a number of different ways reaching out to the masses. Digital corporate media has changed advertising due to the consumer information they receive over the internet. This enables them to customize their ads toward a specific audience through the web and other forms of digital technology. The constant advancement and changes in technology will lead companies to continue to spread their messages and market their goods from anywhere an ad can be placed.

Digital corporate media manipulates and brainwashes people of all ages and economic backgrounds through their media advertising and turn their audience into conformist consumers due the influence their ads have on the things people buy and are interested in. These corporate companies target everyone and digital technology has just made it that much easier for them. As long as the masses see their products and want their products the more brainwashed they become in wanting to have and buy the product because of its popularity.

This connects with the boom of technology and its constant development .Making it easier for corporate companies to market their stuff. This way they will be able to advertise their goods and services a number of different ways reaching out to the masses. Digital corporate media has changed advertising due to the consumer information they receive over the internet. Therefore enabling them to customize their ads toward a specific audience through the web and other forms of digital technology. The constant advancement and changes in technology will lead companies to continue to spread their messages and market their goods from anywhere an ad can be placed.

Digital corporate media shows how people get manipulated and brainwashed by media advertising and turn their audience into conformist consumers due the influence their ads have on their brains. . The corporate companies get you to purchase their products. The manipulation digital media advertising has over the masses results in corporate gain.

HW 19

Hey Sam,

I like how the paper flows really well so far. It seems like you will have no problem proving your thesis. I think it's good that you used a quote from class and parts of your previous blog posts. You also used your own personal experience with this topic. You stated some of the pos and negatives of digital media and how it is effecting our society. I'm sure that the rest of the paper will include more quotes and go even more in depth.

Michelle,

I like the direction your paper is going in. I think that the evidence you still need to add will make your arguments even stronger.I think that maybe you should add a little introduction so that your thesis doesn't just hang there. I also think that you should check for minor errors like grammar to make sure that the sentences make sense when you read them out loud. Besides that I liked it so far.

HW 18 -Rough Draft

Think about all the time you spend either watching TV, surfing the web, listening to the radio, reading magazines/newspapers …etc. Now think about how many advertisements you brain is bombarded with every time. The goal of digital corporate media is to get you (the consumer) to buy what they want you to buy. This is all the advertisements they throw at you. One of the fastest ways that will allow them to do so is in digital form. Since our society has become so digitally obsessed it seems like the perfect way for corporate companies to get you to buy their
products. By doing so our society is not only becoming “corporate puppets” but we are all turning into what the media tells us to become. We are becoming so fixated and focused on all the materialistic things they tell us we need and should buy. Digital corporate media is brainwashing people while turning them into conformist consumers.

Advertising is a way for retailers to get all those who use various forms of digital media to buy and make aware of their goods. Two consistently strong contributors in most categories and purchase funnel phases are television and the Internet”(http://www.tvweek.com/news/2009/04/study_shows_tvs_impact_on_cons.php) Ad’s that appear on the television screen every time you watch TV about the movies you should go see to the home and kitchen appliances you need to make lives easier to the ad links that appear on the sides the websites you visit everyday influences the purchases as a consumer you make
every day. Whether we choose to acknowledge it or not technology is powerful. If it
can have the ability to influence consumer purchasing then imagine what else it can do.

We as people all have wants and needs. Digital corporate media just tells us what those wants and needs should be through their multiple advertisements. “Advertisers are insisting that not only is their ad served, but the user is engaged on that page and are going to see their ad. This is moving the business from buying space to actually buyingtime.”(http://www.digitalmediabuzz.com/2009/07/online-advertising-tv-model/) Part of the plan to reach out to consumers in order to sell their products is through multiple forms of digital media. Since we are surrounded by
digital media on a daily basis, promoting their products this way will keep us surrounded by them as well. Advertising affects how and what we as consumers choose to buy. The more ads we see, the more money corporate companies make because eventually we will want to buy whatever it is they are trying to sell us.

One way for companies to attract buyers is getting them to purchase items online,
thanks to their ads. Also know as online shopping. By getting consumers (you) to visit their store virtually, whether that is through the pop-up ads or the ones that show up on the websites to visit their online store to start purchasing . “The current technology also allows sellers to track customers€™ product preferences, with their permission, and alert these customers of new products they may be waiting for or could be interested in.”(http://wiki.mediaculture.org.au/index.php/Online_Shopping_-_Benefits_for_Sellers) By placing their Ads online allow retailers to get a better picture of their consumers so that they know what to sell to them in order for them to buy their goods based on the consumers preferences for when you are actually ready to make a purchase. Using the internet as a tool allows companies to target consumers to get them to buy their products. Having consumers shop
online benefit the companies because it allows their customers to shop online 24/7, no matter where they are.

HW 17

Sam,

I like your thesis. I think it's great! You clearly state your point and I know exactly what your paper is going to be about from reading it. I also think that the evidence you are deciding to use with help prove your arguments. I think it's helpful that you have various sources to refer to.

Michelle,

I think your thesis is much better now especially after you changed it. I think that the sources/evidence you will be using will help you to write this paper. For the second argument you could also use Feed as a source for evidence. There are a couple of parts in the book where it shows how the character conform due to their feeds.

HW 15

Dear Yasmin,

I liked that you chose to do research on a topic that interested you and had meaning for you. I liked that you quoted the research which I think will be helpful for you to use in your upcoming essay. I thought that your analysis of the quotes and article were interesting. I thought your thoughts on the study proved why you disagree with the evidence the study found. I agree that maybe the the studies should have been done on older children. I also think that you could use what the author in "Everything bad is good for you" has to say about video games in your essay.
I also liked the second part of this post about the art and the quotes you used. I though they were very insightful.

I don't think that you will have any problem with the art aspect of this project. You're pretty good at artistic stuff :)

Dear Sam,

I liked your post on the research you did on the usage of cell phones since you clearly stated you depend on in. I think that you could definitely use the article in essay you will be writing soon. I think that you should directly quote the article. Use specific quotes in your essay to support your opinions. I liked the article about using the cell phone while driving because not only do I agree with it but I thought it clearly stated how dangerous doing the two can be. I liked that the articles spoke about different aspects of cell phones from the usage to the development of them over the years. I also think that you should include your experience with the digital experiment you did. It seemed like it impacted you in a way. I think you would benefit even more from a digital fast ;)

HW 14

In the excerpt from "Everything Bad Is Good for You" on video games, suggests that they actually help those who play them. Is reading books more effective in improving our intelligence than games and other media entertainment? according to the author I think the answer would be not necessarily because though reading is important and being a good reader is a good skill to have, video games aren't as bad as people make them out to be.Video games engage the player and allows them to use different "sensory and motor cortices". Video games allows the player to be active and to use their senses, but books on the other hand don't allow for any interaction. It becomes just the reader and the book. With video games it becomes the player and the game world filled with other players. Playing video games allows one to be more social. Reading may not be as good for us as it has been made out to be. with reading you have no control of the outcome or the story because it already has been written. But while playing a video game you are able to make the moves.

Video games and reading both very different things each have their own benefits. Reading allows us to us our minds. It calls for our focus and effort. Being a skilled reader could also help to get you a better job because you are using your brain to makes sense of the words and story on the pages. Video games may have it's benefits as well, they may not be a complete waste of time after all. Video games help you hand-eye coordination , memory and visual intelligence. The video game world it seems can be very different from the real world. It also may not always be fun. Playing a game can be hard work- the players run into obstacles they have to get over. With playing a video game you are free, it's your world-you fill in the missing information yourself or with the help of a guide.

The except on TV in "Everything Bad is Good For You" spoke about the influence it has on us. The author argues that television even though it is less active than video games, sparks our mind and allows us to think in different ways despite the subject matter of the program we may be watching. For example if you were watching a show like CSI then you would have to follow the storyline to make sense of the mystery or crime and by doing so maybe you will be able to solve it on your own before the end of the episode. "Televised intelligence is on the rise" due to the ways (technology) in which we choose to watch it and the demands on the people who watch it. How the TV shows over the years have improved their plot lines and the structure of the show (interconnected subject matter and narrative). How the shows we watch follow specific threads (plots) based on episodes and how the show develops throughout the season.

The author brings up "the sleeper curve" which implies that over the years the audience (views of television) has grown smarter. We are more able to understand TV show s with complex story lines thanks to the many threads these shows have included in their episodes. The proof is in the ratings and the success of the shows we watch. It seems like TV and movies use the same techniques (the flashing arrow) as books do so that they keep the viewers interested and aware of what is going on.
therefore all the audience needs to do in order to follow along is pay attention to the details or the flashing arrows. But the audience doesn't necessarily need he arrows because it takes "the fun out of watching" because the viewers of today are smarter and can figure out what is going on in the show on their own without the help of the arrows.

Substance and texture are two things according to the author that everything we watch needs to have in order to make sense of what is going on. The texture of the program doesn't need to be relevant to the rest of the narrative, it's just there to add to the substance of the show. We as the audience have to use our intelligence to figure out the story line. Which makes us smarter viewers.

I agree that TV and TV shows have developed over the years in many ways and the viewers have developed and grown with it as well. We are now able to make sense of more complicated stories lines allowing there to be more threading involved. We as the audience are smarter now than say the audience a couple of years ago (sleeper curve). I also agree with all the authors points on reading, it is important to be a good reader but maybe reading isn't everything. Video games could also be apart of helping improve our intelligence and skills. I'm not sure about this. I think that the stuff in the end about guide books and cheat sheets was a bit unnecessary.

It seems like "Feed" and "Everything Bad is Good For You" are two different books. In "Feed" the author tries to demonstrate through the characters and the plot how bad video games, TV and the internet are for people. How people's "feeds" are making them lazy and stupid. But in "Everything Bad Is Good For You" the author tries to argue how that might be the case. How media entertainment like video games and watching TV actually improves our intelligence. How our "feeds" are actually good for us and not the opposite.

HW 13

I think that Freed is a piece of revelatory art because the author gets his message out about how teenagers are so consumed by digital media. His allegory is a form of art imitating life. His book would be considered a form of art because he created it. It's his form of a painting because he's getting his ideas/thoughts/feelings out on paper. The author of Feed chooses to reveal his message about the addiction to digital people have. How people constantly use and can't live without it.

I think that Feed is a relevant piece of art because it talks about what is going on in our culture today . How digital technology has become apart of our culture. People can't get enough of their "feeds". It's become a way of life for many. It's almost like we live in two different worlds - actual world and then the digital world. The author expresses his ideas on this topic of digital takeover through his writing. How he allows the characters in the book to realize that maybe being so digital isn't the best way to live.

I think that the author wrote Feed to get people thinking. I think it was written as as a book because it told a story of these characters lives, which is very similar in certain ways to the way we live our lives. This makes me think about how I would choose to expresses my own thoughts on a related topic. What will I create to get people thinking? like Feed has done for us. I would want people to take away something meaningful from my art work.

HW 12

Being that "Feed" is an allegory, if I were to compare it to teenagers current lifestyle and their use of digital media today "Feed" for the most part be on target. I think that the author made it a point to point out how teenagers become so consumed with digital media ("Feeds"). How it affects their way of living and how they go through each day relying on the feeds. In the book everyone has a "feed", there are very few without feeds which is the same for teenagers today. No one can live without digital media , it's a very hard thing to do. Some other similarities from the book and today is the slang the characters use like "meg" or "youch" - teenagers today also use slang to mean the same thing like "mad" or "yo". Just like the "feeds" frequently update the characters in the book so do our computers whenever we are online (aim, facebook, myspace,youtube,twitter...etc). The characters in the book also like teenagers today keep up with the latest trends. Advertisements online also get us to buy stuff just like the "feeds" for the characters in the book.

Some differences from the book and today is the characters in the book have their computers directly in their brains. The characters in the book also the take the latest trends to an an extreme, since they are updated via their "feeds" like every second the girls change their hairstyles a number of times a day. Another thing that is different is the "lesions" that the characters have on their bodies that everyone thinks is cool to have. Teenagers today don't have "lesions".

In "Feed" the author mentions the "decline of civilization" due the "feeds" and I can agree because people have become so reliant on digital technology that it's making us lazy and stupid. With that we aren't really learning about the world or what is out there except for what is going on in our digital worlds. We are escaping reality and losing touch with civilization. We should try to resist our "feeds" before it's too late.

Experiment

Since I don't go outside sometimes because I'm always inside, either on the computer for hours, watching TV or on my phone. I decided to give it a break for an entire day and voluntarily decided to spend the day digital free. It was hard to do. I'm so used having my phone with me (which I left at home) so I wouldn't be tempted to use it. I was also worried at the same time (almost paranoid) in a sense because I thought to myself- what if something happened to me? Then I wouldn't have my phone to contact anyone with. I gave up watching TV for an entire day. Talk about missing your favorite shows. But the most difficult one to give up was my laptop (my life) not being able to go online to check my email's and do all the other stuff I do online, sucked. Instead I decided to actually go outside. I went to the park with a couple of friends for a nice stroll, then I ate some "real" food instead of the usual crap I snack on because I'm always online. The rest of the day actually turned out to be fun because it felt better to actually converse with my friends in person and I found that being with them was are actually more entertaining. At the end of the day I was proud of myself because I actually survived a day without doing anything digital.

HW #10

Since I watch TV whenever I get the chance, I decided to do some informal research on the influence TV has on people. Is it good , bad or both? Below are some articles I read and summarized:

This article was about the influence TV and radio has on our daily lives. From the good it offers us-it's a source of learning about others around the world. To the bad - all the inappropriate TV programs out there that little children watch. Compared to how much an influence the radio is in our lives. This article states that the radio isn't used as much as the TV. Overall this article was for digital media TV and radio) and how it benefits us (helps us learn). I agree that TV influences the way children act and behave."The heaviest viewers of television are children", so naturally their minds are easily influenced by what they see on the screen.

This article "TV shows have a bad influence on children" was about the bad influence TV has on children in the UK. How the shows that children watch, make them violent and use inappropriate language at school. How the TV shows that some children watch influence their behavior and how they act towards others in a bad way. This article was basically saying that the kids watch these inappropriate and violent shows and then copy what they see.
http://www.myfavoriteezines.com/articles/TV-watching-pros-cons.html

This article stated how television is a daily source of information. It also spoke a bit about how advertisements capture our attention. I also liked the interpretation of how television makes us lazy "Television makes people physically inactive." I agree with this because TV makes it hard to do other things especially if your watching your favorite TV show. This piece also spoke about the health problems watching too much TV can cause like poor eyesight. Overall this article spoke about the advantages and disadvantages of TV.

HW 9

Sam,

Thanks for noticing my facial expressions during my video. It showed me you payed attention even to the small details. I think that it also would have made my video a little more interesting if I had showed what was going on, on the screen of my cell phone.I agree with your comment about how some kids can become overweight due to technology -playing video games. Technology (playing video games, watching TV...etc) makes us inactive because we sit in one place and become so focused on what is happening on the screens. Leading us to eventually become unhealthy because we don't go outside as much any more due to the distractions and hold technology has on us. What if we decide to give up our digital distractions once or twice a week and go outside (do something physically active)? Don't you think we'll have less of a chance of becoming overweight.

HW 8

Hey Yasmin,
I liked that you decided to do something different! It was an interesting piece of technology you chose to film yourself using. I have to agree with you, using the sewing machine instead of playing a video game or texting like I did is a lot more productive. I think that all this technology we use on a daily basis doesn't really benefit us. It just makes us lazy. For example with the Wii why can't we just go out and do some actual work outs instead of pretending like we are with the wii.I think that you should have added the video of you playing the video game.I would have liked to have seen it. I like zombies. Your video makes me consider how unproductive all the technology I use is. Now I'm sad.

Nice video. Good thoughts.

Sam,

I liked your video, It seemed like you were really into what you were doing-reading and listening to your ipod. I sometimes do that to. It was like you were in three places at once. You were lost in your book, while into your music , and then into the conversation you were having on your phone. Sometimes it can be hard to juggle all three or just focus on one.I have to agree that no being able to express ourselves through words was hard. But I think that one of the points of this assignment was to express how we communicate digitally and I think you really showed that in your video. The question you asked " what would happen if I didn't have a cell phone or an ipod then what?" really made me think because that was what my video was about. I probably would I have been forced to do something more productive. I think that if we all gave up our digital equipment we could be doing more to stimulate our minds, like reading. You had good insights overall.

Q & A

When I asked the questions " How many hours do you think people should spend online, watching TV...etc? and "How important is digital media/technology in your life and why?

These where the responses:

Brother: "It's really important to me because I get to film and upload my skateboarding videos and watch other friends and people's videos online, I also go online for video game tips and instructions. Instead of asking someone how to do something or make something I can just Google it or youtube it. My friends and I also get to play games online together (Xbox live). The digital media/technology helps me communicate with people and it's easy to get information on something. It keeps me entertained."

Strangers:

A mom: " About 1 1/2 hours. My children are really into it. Digital media and technology is really important to my children. For me it's not that important. My son is really into technology, he wants to do something involving that as a career."

A man sitting at a table near the park: "Technology and digital media is not that important to me. I'd rather be sitting at the park. Socializing with people is more important, all that other stuff like TV, being online-no."

Best friend: " It's extremely important ! I can't go anywhere without my ipod and cell phone. I use technology to find out what I'm what I'm going to wear in the mornings, by checking the weather on TV or on my laptop. Unlike my parents generation instead of going to the park or to be outdoors when I'm bored I watch TV."

HW 4 - Triangular Comments 1

Yasmin,

I liked how short and sweet your post was, it got straight to the point. We definitely have become addicted to technology and way too dependent on it to get us through our days. I feel like instead of wasting our time like you mentioned we could be doing things that actually help stimulate our minds and bodies. For example we could be doing less digital stuff and more athletic stuff or we could read more. I feel like you could definitely elaborate more on our dependence on technology. Why does it matter so much to us? You made me think about the amount of time I spend wasting on technology everyday.

Thanks for that.

Kiana,

I liked how you connected the topic of the dependency on technology to your own life. Your right about the fact that technology is constantly in use daily, we rely on it to keep us going. It's almost like we can't escape it. If it isn't our cell phones, then it's the internet, if not the internet then the TV-sometimes all at once. Technology seems to be more important to many because it keeps you connected and up to date. This connects back to people's dependency on it to function. Maybe you could elaborate more on the negative effects of our dependency on technology. Your post made me think about the negative and positive effects of technology on my daily life.

You had a really interesting post.

Sam,
I liked your post and how you wrote about your daily usage of your blackberry or "crackberry" as you referred to it. I liked how you brought up the question "Where would we be without all this technology?" I think that this is a really important question to consider. Maybe you could write your answer to this question in a future post. While reading your post you made me consider how different and more advanced technology has become over the years and how reliable this generation is on technology. We could be so doing so much more with our time if we cut down on our usage of technology. Technology is taking over our lives and if we don't do something about it now it might be even harder to change our habits in the future.

Nice Post.

Digiworld

I think that the digital world is such an important part of our generations social life. It's how we communicate ( aim, email, facebook, myspace,...etc) and find out information. The internet is a source of instant information. Communicating and connecting with each other this way has become part of our daily lives. I do think that there is something addictive about the digital/ technology world. It's an addiction that can be very hard to shake since it has become a way of life for us. I want to know why have we become so dependent on technology? What appeals to us about all things digital?

Life has become so easy with all the technology we have out now. I don't think you ever have to leave your house unless you wanted to. I mean thanks to the internet you are able to shop online, order food, chat to people overseas, work from home, take online courses, pay your bills...etc. The possibilities are endless. People use the internet for a myriad of reasons. Surprisingly you're also able to find a mate/spouse online thanks to all the dating sites such as match.com or eHarmony that are available. Let me also mention that you can become famous overnight on the internet, due to the exposure it provides you and the millions of people it can connect you with.

Though I also feel like the internet and other forms of technology can be used for malicious and negative purposes. For example spreading gossip or threatening someone. The internet can also be used to prey on children or as a form of stalking. Technology also has a negative impact on people's social skills. I'm talking about the lack of contact with people. Less face to face conversations are taking place. Why even bother? when they can just instant message ,email you or even call you. The internet for many is also used as an escape from reality and you can become whoever you want while on it.
